India plans indigenous GPU chips within 24 months to strengthen AI capabilities
India is planning to develop its own Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) chips within approximately 24 months as part of its broader strategy to strengthen domestic artificial intelligence and semiconductor capabilities. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) is also advancing Semiconductor Mission 2.0 to encourage chip design, manufacturing, advanced packaging and research.

India is taking steps towards reducing its dependence on imported semiconductor technologies by developing indigenous GPU chips and strengthening its domestic semiconductor ecosystem.
According to MeitY Secretary S. Krishnan, the government is targeting the development of an Indian GPU chip within approximately 24 months. The initiative forms part of India's broader ambition to establish technological capabilities across the artificial intelligence value chain.
Under India Semiconductor Mission 2.0, the government aims to support semiconductor fabrication, chip design, advanced packaging, manufacturing equipment and specialised materials.
The strategy also focuses on commercialising indigenous processors such as SHAKTI and VEGA, developed using the RISC-V architecture.
India is additionally encouraging the development of specialised AI models for sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing, healthcare and education.
The initiative could strengthen India's position in the global semiconductor industry, support domestic technology companies and create new opportunities for research, innovation and electronics manufacturing.
